About

As part of Asia NOW’s Special Programme, Payal Arya, recipient of PAIR 2026, presents मुड पान दी ईच्छा (An Intangible Claim) and Nani’s Slippers.

Dedicated to her late naani (maternal grandmother), the presentation explores displacement, memory, and land ownership across time and borders. An Intangible Claim is a found-footage film that weaves oral histories of the 1947 Partition with visuals of modern ecological crisis and land reclamation—contrasting lost landscapes and poisoned wells against surging tides and personal longing. Accompanying the film, Nani’s Slippers features stainless-steel slippers modelled on a pair worn by her grandmother, cast in the same metal that eventually became part of her body.

Payal Arya's presentation at the 12th edition of Asia NOW is supported by the French Institute in India and Prameya Art Foundation.
